Before you buy Forxiga online

What Is Forxiga?

forxiga drug

Forxiga (also known as Farxiga in some countries) is a brand name of dapagliflozin – a medicine for type 2 diabetes treating. It is produced in the form of pills containing 5 or 10 mg of dapagliflozin. Forxiga relates to the category of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors. Its main function is withdrawal of extra sugar (glucose) from the bloodstream through the kidneys. It can be used as a supplement to the prescribed diet and exercise therapy or as part of complex diabetes mellitus therapy for better glycemic control. The drug is sold by prescription only.

Is It For Me?

Forxiga is for you if you have type 2 diabetes (not type 1!), and if keeping a diet combined with physical therapy doesn’t provide the required control over the sugar level. The drug doesn’t suit you if you have severe kidney problems (acute or chronic kidney diseases) or bladder cancer. Also it is not for you if you have diabetic ketoacidosis. Self-medication with Forxiga is not allowed. It is a prescription only drug.

How do I choose the right dosage?

As Forxiga is always prescribed by a medical specialist, the dose in every particular cased is also defined by a doctor. A commonly prescribed dose is 10 mg of dapagliflozin daily. However, in some cases this dose can be reduced. For example, if a patient is taking medicines that stimulate production of insulin or other drugs reducing glucose level, a doctor can prescribe 5 mg Forxiga as a starting dose as a higher dose can cause hypoglycemia, which is the reverse side of the coin. Also the dose can be decreased in patients suffering from kidney and/or liver problems.

How do I take Forxiga?

Unless otherwise prescribed, Forxiga is taken daily. The best time for its taking is morning. It can be taken both on an empty stomach and after meals, but the time for its taking should always be the same. Before taking the drug, read the Medication Guide – an instruction for patients, which is supplied in every package of the medicine. The tab is taken orally, whole. You should not chew or cut it. The duration of treatment is specified by a doctor.

What are the mechanisms behind Forxiga?

Forxiga belongs to the pharmacological group of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors. In simple words, its mechanism of action includes inhibiting (blocking) of SGLT2 protein in kidneys. This protein prevents renal excretion of sugar, throwing glucose released back in the bloodstream. After the action of SGLT2 is inhibited, glucose is excreted with urine, while its level in blood decreases. The effect is usually seen after the first taking.

What is Forxiga uptake time?

forxiga 10mg

After taking a pill of Forxiga by a patient, dapagliflozin is quickly and completely absorbed into the blood. Its maximum concentration in the blood is reached approximately in two hours, if the pill is taken on an empty stomach, and some later if it is taken with food. The mean terminal plasma half-life of the medicine is 12 hours. Forxina is effective for 24 hours, and its effectiveness doesn’t reduce as a result of regular taking.

How efficient is Forxiga?

Forxiga relates to highly effective drugs, which is proved by placebo-based clinical trials. However, as it is rather a “young” drug, its effects hasn’t been studied long enough, and today specialists can’t say for sure how the patients taking Forxiga will feel after 10-15 years of its regular use. Today the drug is approved in many countries; it is successfully prescribed by endocrinologists. But theoretical researches as well as clinical trials continue.

Does Forxiga have any side effects?

Before starting treatment with Forxiga, one is strongly recommended to learn about its possible side effects. The most common side effect of the drug is hypoglycemia. It can result in severe headache, hunger, dizziness, fainting, vomiting and anxiety. To cope quickly with it you should have something with high content of glucose, such as fruit, biscuits, juice or soda. Other common effects include more frequent urination, low blood pressure, feeling of dehydration (thirst) and some others. If you have some uncommon effects after taking Forxiga or have allergic reaction to it, stop taking it and apply for medical consultation.

Any essential tips on Forxiga use?

  • Forxiga can interact with some medicines, so, if you are taking something, don’t forget to tell your doctor about it. Be especially cautious with diuretics, all types of heart drugs, including medicines for hypo- and hypertension treating and medicines belonging to NSAIDs.
  • Forxiga is not prescribed to children under 18, pregnant and breastfeeding women. If you are going to become a mother, tell your doctor about it.
  • Forxiga shows the best results when it is used in combination with other methods of treatment. Special diet and physical therapy are crucial for maintaining adequate glycemic control.
  • Avoid dehydration as lack of fluid in the organism can make the side effects of Forxiga worse.
  • Test sugar level regularly, and tell your doctor of any serious changes.
Storage

Tablets should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed container.
